Please note the Australian Institute for Teaching and School Leadership (2018) document page 10 High Quality Professional Learning: report on early childhood, casual/relief, rural/remote teaching contexts that notes a finding "Teachers on casual employment make up a significant cohort of the Australian teaching workforce... The best estimate provided to AITSL was that there are 70,000 CRTs across Australia, or approximately 20 per cent of the teaching profession—however national data is needed to get an accurate figure. The Victorian Institute of Teaching cited that over the course of a learner's schooling they will be taught by CRTs for approximately 10-15 per cent of their education (VIT, 2018)..." in summary excess staff are trained. Sadly universities fail to advertise the detail to prospective students of the oversupply of trained staff and to note in their introductory class the excess staff exists.

CRT pd program there are free to attend and are fully funded by the Department of Education and Training.

In 2017 TLN ran 45 online courses and 10 face to face courses.

Over 3700 successful completions of courses occurred.

The TLN had:

· The on-demand courses were available at all hours.

· The PD was aligned to the Victoria priority document Education State, which means that CRTs were receiving the same types of PD to which permanent teachers had access through their schools

· The PD was free, which helped many CRTs re-register with the VIT

· The online format was friendly and welcoming, and allowed CRTs to make connections where they had felt isolated previously

· The online format helped CRTs upskill their ICT skills

Welcome to the Wimmera CRT Network.

Welcome to the Wimmera CRT Network.

About the networks and the Wimmera Horsham CRT network.
In 2008 the Victorian Institute of Teaching started a program of providing an avenue for relief teachers to meet regularly, share information and gain knowledge. They started providing the support and guidance to assist those interested in forming locally based volunteer support networks run by local CRTs for local CRTs. The VIT doesn't run the networks, each network is an independent group. To date they have created 25 existing CRT Support Networks and have every intention of offering support to start new networks too.

The Wimmera Horsham CRT Support Network has existed since around 2010. The CRT Network is focused on the Professional Development of relief teachers, there will be opportunities for interested teachers to attend workshops and for social events.

Please email

shaynekeenan@gmail.com

for more information.

If you wish to attend any pd activities or post a comment, you need to contact the email for the Horsham Wimmera network.

This website offers an inexpensive way to participate in Professional Learning. Share your ideas and experiences with other Casual Relief Teachers.
The story of Professional Development and the VIT.

Remember the VIT standards when undertaking PD.

There are 7 standards.

Relate PD to those standards.

There are many items that might be considered PD -:

Attend a session like PD with the dept like the edustar program.

Go online to research the five Es.

Prepare a model for an art class.

A phone call comes the night prior for CRT duties.

Attend a morning school briefing.

Attend after school functions as with a guest speaker.

Undertake some readings with an education emphasis.

It might be a newspaper article or academic item. Remember keep the story or date and page etc.

Attend a special session like the recent UB speaker on parenting.

Attend union pd.

Go online and check the union PD details.

Read some books if a librarian in a school.

Undertake a formal course i.e.: CPR as run by the Horsham Hub.

Learn a new skill i.e.: how to make a blog.

Attend a union meeting.

Watch a dvd like Bill Rogers on class room management.

Attend another regions VIT CRT PD day.

Remember if working as a CRT in a school ask the principal or others PLEASE if you can attend the PD happening when you are to the school.

There are many examples of PD.

The VIT can help clarify some other examples of PD.

What is evidence for PD?

The VIT have PDI and teacher identified PD.

If you undertake a formal course the PDI maybe in the online listing.

Otherwise it will be teacher identified PD as listed above.

What type of evidence do I require to prove the PD?

Copy of the newspaper story as for personal readings. Page number and title as for personal readings.

Academic record as for University of Ballarat formal studies.

Certificate of attendance as with a VIT CRT network day.

Receipt for PD as with the Horsham HUB if attending the CPR session.

Copy of the web pages viewed with date as for personal research.

Ask the principal or his PD person of a school to please sign your diary if you attend an after school session as for a guest speaker.

Some schools will give a certificate of attendance.

How much time do I require for VIT PD?

Most people require 20 hours yearly.

Some people are still on the old process of 100 hours for five years.

What is an audited of PD by the VIT?

They may wish to review details of your PD so keep records.

It does happen to some teachers.

It does not happen to every person.

Remember please keep paper records or upload the details to the myvit site.

If you need to help with recording the PD remember to visit the MYVIT web site or download this file.

1858_Record-form-with-standards-CRT-1

Help I urgently need PD because I do not have enough for the VIT registration.

The simplest way is to pay a provider for some PD.

It might be you are a Graduate Of Secondary education person then undertake some formal studies i.e.:

off campus via a Graduate Of Primary units with Murdoch WA.

on campus via a Master of Education.

A TAFE course or units as with University of Ballarat.

Remember the VIT have web pages that list appropriate post graduate course so visit the VIT web site.

Also visit the other VIT regional web pages they may be offering PD.

Finally what if I have query regarding my PD.

Contact the VIT to clarify a particular issue on 1300 888 067

Please remember keep the records.

Using a Free on-line Open2Study course for VIT PD.

"Last year I took on one of these free short courses and am about to do another. I did 2013 Photoshop for the Classroom. It was provided by CSU Charles Sturt University. It lasted 6 weeks and took me about 10 hours per week.
My problem is that I don't have a modern enough computer and fast enough Internet for the course. This was solved by downloading the on-line lectures at our local library after they had happened and putting them onto a USB to view at home. I couldn't get anywhere near the version of the software used (available free on the web) to match my computer's abilities, but went back to a version of it that fitted my computer. It did not do all the whizz-bang stuff that was on the lectures, but I could find the basic operations this was based on and so complete the course.
Students in this course had to upload a required weekly activity. Each week, I reported my time to my VIT PD records, including the time watching the Lecture and doing the practical exercises as professional learning - ensuring that what I created with them could be used for a specific use in a school. I uploaded what I created and a short explanation of how it could be used in future, as evidence for each week for my PD time.
I found this a very acceptable way to accumulate PD time, under the teacher identified activity section. There was also an on-line multiple-course test at the end of the course. To get the statement of completion, you could qualify with a pass on the test, submission of all exercises or with both. This pdf statement listed how you had qualified for it and the result on the MC test if you took it- this I also put into my VIT PD records.
I am now about to undertake another course. I would recommend others take a look at what is available FREE on the web, and how you can use it for teacher identified activity for you VIT PD"

Teaching Standards: A Nationally Consistent Approach

The Victorian Institute of Teaching conducted informational
sessions in October 2012 throughout the state for principals and school leaders. These sessions were in general a brief on the changes happening to registration as Australia moves towards National Standards for teachers.
In Victoria, there are approx 118,765 registered teachers
of these, 102,645 are fully registered, which means 1/10 teachers are provisionally registered.
Of the new registrants this year, 1,000 teachers have overseas qualifications, 756 have interstate qualifications and 4300 new Victorian qualifications.
In order to register with the VIT, you must have an approved qualification or equivalent and proof of at least 80 days teaching practice. A principal or similar will confirm that you've conducted this teaching practice and that you're competent enough to be registered. A major change effecting overseas-trained teachers is that teaching practice obtained overseas will no longer qualify you for full registration. It means being provisionally registered for 2 years, during which time to prove yourself a competent teacher by conducting at least 80 days of teaching practice within Australia/NZ
and gain a recommendation from a local principal/school leader who's observed your professional teaching manner.

The 80 days maybe from various schools.

The new National Professional Standards for Teachers have been developed by the Australian Institute for Teaching and School Leadership (AITSL) to "reflect and build on national and international evidence that a teacher's effectiveness has a powerful impact on students, with a broad consensus that teacher quality is the single-most important in school factor
influencing student achievement. Effective teachers can be a source of inspiration and, equally importantly, provide a dependable and consistent influence on young people as they make choices about further education, work and life".

These standards are split into three domains: Professional
knowledge, Professional Practice and Professional Engagement, and for the large part stay fairly consistent to the VIT teaching standards they replace despite moving from 8
standards to 7.
The renewal process is currently transitioning from every 5 years to annually, due September 30th every year.

The VIT requires the normal payment by Sept 30th
each year. If a teacher is late making payment the cost is a $30 late fee in addition to their renewal fee unless they are able to communicate extenuating circumstances that have caused their delay. Teachers must provide suitability to be a teacher (current and satisfactory National Criminal History Record
Check, declarations related to suitability) and Professional Practice (at least 10 days teachings in the past year, at least 20 hours professional development activities). When declaring your Professional Development, you must now reference the National Standards rather than the Victorian.
All the new nationally consistent elements of teacher registration will go into effect December 31, 2012 for new teachers. The new renewal process won't affect
those teachers already in the system until October 1, 2013.

Education PD and trips or excursions.

Remember if you travel some educated related visits they maybe where possible equal some PD.
They may include excursions to -
a. other school.
b. a university.
c. a museum or education related centre like the science museum.
Thus it is possible to gain some PD.
Remember to relate the trip education visit to the VIT standards.
It may also equal a tax deduction some part of such a trip.
To prove you attended these locations where possible keep -
a. ticket entry butts.
c. programs.
d. photos if you attend.
e. visitor book entry where possible.
To achieve the following it maybe possible to photograph your entry to a visitor book with a digital camera.
In some cases it may require you contacted a school or similar before taking the trip.
Your principal may have provided you with a letter.
Remember think about how a trip can add to your understanding and learning re education.
As an example if on a holiday break you visited sovereign hill you might relate it the education AUSVELS and your pd re the VIT.
In some cases there are education officers to these locations and they may explain what is available for student learning.
This may involve interaction with colleagues.
Please think how a trip may relate to your PD.
It maybe a part of a trip that is pd so remember to calculate carefully the components.
The ideas expressed above are suggestions and not mandatory.
Please accept or reject any parts you as a teacher think do not apply to your situation.
